ABOUT CITIES & THE FUTURE (I)
The first 25 years of the 21st century are historically fascinating.
For the first time since the Athens charter, we are witnessing a profound review of the way we inhabit planet Earth, the only one in which today we are able to prosper as a species.
We are currently immersed in the year 2022, after having lived a fairly intense 2021. Global economic crises that do not seem to end, pandemics that require our constant attention, an incessant trickle of information on all kinds of issues that we were not aware of before, such as Climate Change. And I say conscious, because deep down we knew, or at least we suspected, that the perpetual economic growth or uncontrolled consumerism that we have lived through and practiced for much of the 20th century did not augur a prosperous and sustainable future over time.
And it is that the development of our lives, at least in the global society to which we belong, is linked, although we do not know it, to a constant transformation of our environment, to the means used to prosper other societies or Communities geographically in the antipodes of the place that we have to inhabit… Everything is connected. It always has been.
This post does not pretend to talk about globalization, how we are facing it and what facets it has, but about how all the means that we have at our disposal thanks to it (technological, economic, informative, communicative … etc), can facilitate the taking of decisions in the face of problems that concern us all, (I mean all, the 7.8 billion people that make up our species today) in this case climate change and the impact it has on our cities, our prosperity, survival and future as a species.
At this point in the film it is clear that it is an irremediable situation and that the practice of a global conscience that faces this situation is vital, at least in those industrialized and economically powerful societies, in which doing nothing will lead us to perpetuate an expired modus operandi. To lose a golden opportunity to evolve and be better sentient beings.
To problems, solutions. We must not lose hope or will. We can redirect the ship, make it stronger, more resilient, more sustainable… we must and we will.
